5 Lawn Improvement Tips

Lawn Tips

5 Basic Tips for Improving the Health of Your Lawn

Without proper maintenance, any lawn can wilt and brown. Effective lawn care can keep your grass lush and green and it's as easy as these five lawn improvement tips.

1. Reduce the Thatch

Thatch is the dead foliage that builds up on top of soil over time. A little thatch amongst your grass can be a helpful layer of protection for the soil, but too much becomes a problem. As more builds up it prevents proper airflow, water distribution, and access to nutrients. As these needs become harder to obtain, grasses root closer to the surface putting them at higher risk of drowning or becoming infected.

Raking away thatch is an easy step for a better lawn. a metal rake can pull away the dead plant matter with minimal damage to what's living around it. Remember that leaving a small amount behind is fine, but an inch or more of thatch is detrimental to the health of your lawn.

2. Aerate Your Yard

The more a yard is walked on the more compacted the soil gets. This is damaging for your lawn, which loses out on nutrients, water, and airflow as the ground gets tighter. Helpful insects, such as worms, also have a harder time getting to the plants so your grass misses out on the benefits they offer.

To reverse this all you have to do is stir up the dirt to make passageways for air and water to get through, which will, in turn, loosen more dirt.

The best way to make these passageways is through aeration, which is simply the process of poking holes in the ground around your lawn, around 3 inches deep. There are tools for this process, both manual and mechanical, that make the job easier Aerating your lawn on occasion assures a healthy lifestyle for your grass and keeping that soil loose allows bugs to munch on the thatch, aiding you with the first tip.

3. Fertilize the Soil

A good goal in maintaining a healthy lawn is ensuring your grass is deeply rooted. One way to enhance this is through fertilizers. Fertilizers are like vitamins for plants. They fortify, protect, and enrich plants so they can stay healthy and gorgeous.

The most important factors when choosing fertilizer are the species of your grass and your location. Different fertilizers are advantageous in different areas, and at different times of the year. For example, fertilizing in the northern United States is best done in the fall for fortification, while the south gets better results fertilizing throughout spring and summer.

The type of grass you have may do better in different types of fertilizers also. Making sure you are enriching your lawn as much as possible is a great and easy way to promote its health.

4. Take Less Off the Top

The length of the root on grass is determined by its height above ground, so if you're cutting your grass too short, you may be doing more damage than good. To keep root growth from becoming stunted, lift the deck on your mower so that the grass is being cut between 2 and 3 inches high.

Always make sure the blades on the mower are sharp so you are getting a clean cut each time. The deeper the roots grow, the better your lawn is protected from heat and drought.

5. Saturate the Soil Deeper

The last tip for your lawn is about water saturation. It is not uncommon for people to water their lawns multiple times a week for a short period, but this is not the best way to maintain the health of your grass. Instead of short and sweet, try watering your lawn until you have about one inch of saturation in the soil.

If you have sprinklers, you can monitor where an inch is by placing some containers around your yard and waiting until they are an inch full. Otherwise, checking the soil periodically while watering will tell you how saturated it is. The deeper water level promotes root growth and requires watering less often. Just check the soil periodically for dryness within the first few inches. When the ground gets dry, water it again.

Maintaining the health of your yard can be easy with regular use of these five lawn improvement tips. Try them out, and watch your lawn become more beautiful as it becomes healthier and happier.
