Fall Landscaping Tips

fall landscaping tips leaves
Autumn is approaching and temperatures are still dropping, indicating that the outdoor garden parties with our family and friends have also come to an end. However, despite knowing that our garden needs constant care throughout the year to keep it healthy and beautiful, many people neglect it and believe that during the coldest months of the year taking care of the garden's appearance is a waste of time; basically because you don't spend time in it and you can't enjoy it in the same way as when it is warmer.

However, it is precisely in the autumn when we should pay the most attention to our plants, trees and lawns, as their long-term health and ability to bear fruit and maintain a beautiful and healthy appearance will depend entirely on it. As garden owners, we have the responsibility to prepare our garden to survive the cold weather, so that when spring begins and temperatures rise, our garden will come to life just as strongly as in previous years.

Below, to help you preserve your garden's landscape and keep all your plants, trees and lawns in healthy condition throughout the winter, we will give you a series of key tips that will help you achieve this and become a professional landscaper.

Take note!

Remove Dead Plants & Leaves

There are many people who believe that before winter is the perfect time for pruning, but in reality it is quite the opposite. During the autumn we should not leave our garden totally pruned and stripped of its branches, because during the winter it will suffer a lot from low temperatures and might not be ready to generate new shoots. Therefore, instead of pruning we must carefully remove everything we see that is already dead and will not help our garden.

Examine your garden carefully and get rid of all the dead leaves and flowers, sweep the grass well and remove all the leaves that have fallen from the trees and then crush them and use them as a shelter on the skirt of the trees most vulnerable to the cold. It is also a good time to slightly remove all the branches of trees and perennials that we have, while protecting our shrubs and cover them with burlap to protect them from the most extreme temperature drops.

Get Rid of Unsightly Weeds

Weeding is a classic in the maintenance of any garden, but it is also usually the activity that you least want to do and that is most delayed in time because of how tedious it can be and the physical effort involved.

However, cleaning our lawn of impurities is something essential that we will have to do to keep it healthy over the years, because if we don't do it, new grass sprouts might not come out and our garden would start to get sick and look extremely neglected.

Fertilize Your Lawn

Autumn is the best time of year to plant and fertilize our land, as we will help you recover all the nutrients you have lost from the heat of the summer months and leave you much better prepared to cope with the cold.

To do this, it is very important to sow uniformly and look for those spots and nakedness in our garden where life needs to sprout again. When you prepare to sow and fertilize your garden should do so with a view to the future, because where now you see nothing or see something dead and inert, over the months and thanks to your care will appear new stems that will bring new life and color to your landscape.

Keep Up With Lawn Mowing

After the summer our lawn will be much higher and out of control, so it is the perfect time to mow it and leave it at the optimal height for the winter months, between 2 and 2/1 inches high.

If we can't do this and let the grass continue to grow throughout the winter, by the time spring arrives it could have become entangled, which could lead to other serious diseases in our lawn. So don't forget to mow it and leave it just right so that when it grows in the winter it doesn't become entangled.

Hire A Professional!

Fall is a time where we all spend less time outdoors, so our landscapes can quickly get out of hand if not maintained properly during these colder months. It's best to hire a professional landscaper to help you keep everything in tip top shape. Fall is a great time to prune your trees, and it's best to hire someone for tree services instead of attempting to do it yourself. Pruning and tree removal can be dangerous if trees are large or very old.

Our lawn service teams can come weekly or biweekly to keep your lawn mowed and weeds at bay to look pristine all year long. Our landscape design specialists can also help you design the landscape of your dreams so it will be ready to show off in the Spring and Summer!
